Description
The image confirms that this is an authentic Chulucanas pottery vessel handcrafted in northern Peru. The handwritten inscription etched into the polished dark slip on the bottom reads: "Hand Made In Chulucanas Peru" ® Details About Your Vessel • Origin: The town of Chulucanas in the Piura region of Peru, highly famous for its distinctive folk art ceramics. • The Technique: Artisans use pre-Inca Vicús and Tallán techniques. The characteristic smooth black-brown tone is achieved through a specialized reduction-firing process utilizing smoking mango tree leaves, which deposit carbon onto the clay. The Design: The warm, terracotta-orange patterns are created using a "positive/negative" liquid clay slip-resist technique before the firing process occurs. The Artist Signature There is a signature cursive inscription right above the words "Hand Made" The script is somewhat faint, but it appears to spell out "G. Ipanaque" or a similar name ending in "panaqué" (a very common, historic indigenous surname native to the Piura/Chulucanas region). Display Care • Decorative Use Only: Like almost all traditional Chulucanas earthenware, this piece is low-fired and not watertight. $50 OBO Please see my other listings Pick up in Lake Balboa near Sherman Way and Louise.
