It entered production in May 1941 and entered combat in September of that year in an effort to counter German fighters at low and medium altitudes. Used extensively in preparation for the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, it earned a reputation as a tank & motorized transport destroyer during the Normandy campaign and the subsequent campaigns pursuing German forces across France and the BENELUX Countries. The Typhoon was retired following World War II but later versions of it served with the Royal Air Force into the early 1950s.
