1867 US Internal Revenue Permit To Transport Cotton (Reconstruction) Office of the Collector of the 6th district of No Ca Charlotte NC Nov 8th 1867. Permission given to John Y Bryce & Co to transport 65 Bales. See document. He was from Mecklenburg County. He was born in Columbia, SC 1827, and died in 1894. Buried in Pinewood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. He was a son of the late Peter Bryce, a large merchant of Columbia. Col. Bryce came to Charlotte in early life. He met and married Miss Julia C. Jones, daughter of the late Dr. Larkin Jones. To them were born four children — Miss Julia Bryce, Mrs Dr. Tucker, of New York, Mrs. John R. Flagg, and Mr.John G Bryce. Col. Bryce was a cotton commission merchant, and was for years one of the wealthy citizens of the place. He organized the Hornets’ Nest Riflemen and was the first captain of the company. NC 42nd Infantry. He was succeeded by Col. L. S. Williams. During the war Col. Bryce was wounded in the heel, and suffered from the effects of the wound up to the hour of his death. Few men have lived in Charlotte who were held in kinder regard and esteem than Col. Bryce. He was a Christian and a gentleman; guileless, honest and kind. When he had money none enjoyed it more than his friends. He was open-hearted and generous, and died possessor of the good will of all who knew him. Pick up in James Island near folly beach.
