I was a single mom working full-time when I decided that I wanted to go back to school to become a nurse but ALWAYS had an excuse! I won't get into the details but suffice to say, I may not be proud of my reasoning at the time, as it was purely out of spite because this girl Rachel was friends with my now ex husband's best friend from college at the time, it was my first time meeting his friends, and she continued to follow me around and tell everyone I met how "cute!" it was that I "didn't go to school". Needles to say, I left that party pissed off and signed up for classes at my local community college; Montgomery College in Rockville, MD. I had no help, paid my own rent, worked full-time, and was a 22 year old single parent..... What I Accomplished: I earned enough money in grants and scholarships for the first 2 years of college before attending a Transfer Day at my community college where universities came to answer questions for any students wanting to matriculate their credits to a university for a 4 year degree. In those first two years, I worked full time. My second full time job was being a single parent. The THIRD fill time job was looking for scholarships and grants to pay for my coursework. Turned out, I was really good at finding grants and scholarships with some help from an old name anyone needing money for school should know; Matthew Lesko!!!! Well, I Matthew-Leskoed the crap out of finding funding; I surprised the cost of tuition by such a large margin, I received a check for almost $4k every SEMESTER to GO TO school those first 2 years!!! As if THAT was not enough to want me on your side to get your education or child education taken care of.... I went on to transfer to a prestigious 4 year University from which I came to graduate as class president; The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. I had more grants and scholarships to cover my tuition at Hopkins than any student in the history of Hopkins. I was told by the director of finance at Hopkins, when I was chosen by her to be my financial aid advisor; who generally do not do financial aid advising for students any longer at that point in their career, to meet the person who had been awarded more scholarships and grants than anyone else in the history of the University. She was amazed just how devoted a person I must have been because she told me, "I know it took you just as long to get those grants that were $250 as you did for those that were $3k and it's always a quilt when it comes to covering education but I've never seen one this big!" So, want to go back to school? There always a reason not to, you can do it whenever you want.... And.... Parents..... If you're paying for their degree, they don't give a crap at all how much they get in grants so YOU want this service!
