The artistic legacy of the great Takamura Kokun, father of the poet Takamura Kotaro and living national treasure Takamura Hoshu. It is widely known that Takamura Kotaro left behind numerous masterpieces of sculpture. This is unsurprising, as his father, Kokun, mentored contemporary masters such as Hirakushi Denchu, a peerless sculptor active from the Meiji to the early Showa period who stood at the pinnacle of modern Japanese art. Takamura Kokun was a leading figure, holding key positions, including professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now the Tokyo University of the Arts), judge of the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions, and member of the National Treasures Preservation Committee. He was literally celebrated in the international art world, his works widely exhibited, acquired by the Imperial Court, commissioned for the transoms of the Imperial Palace, and received top awards at the Chicago and Paris World's Fairs. Particularly renowned are his statues of Kusunoki Masashige in front of the Imperial Palace and Saigo Takamori in Ueno Park. ■ However, since he was originally a Buddhist sculptor, the Buddha statues he created are filled with meticulous carving technique, fragrant grandeur and subtle, elegant beauty, and he was also a great artist in Buddhist sculpture, as can be seen in this statue of Saint Kannon Bodhisattva
