Description

Ready for restoration and power plant of your choice. Unfortunately don’t have time to restore and need space. Look up value of it restored Manufactured by the Powell Manufacturing Company in Compton, California, the Powell Challenger was a rugged 1960s and 1970s trail bike. Known for a mono-shock rear suspension and a unique pivoting engine mount for belt tensioning, it is an iconic and highly collectible piece of vintage American off-road history. Origins and Early YearsThe Founders: Brothers Hayward and Channing Powell founded Powell Manufacturing Company (PMC) in 1926 in California. They initially produced radios and battery eliminators before pivoting to motor scooters in the 1940s and pickup trucks in the 1950s. The Minibike Boom: Capitalizing on the growing backyard go-kart and minibike craze, Powell Brothers, Inc. launched the Powell Challenger trail bike in the mid-1960s. Advanced Engineering: Unlike typical simple, rigid minibikes of the era, the Challenger was built to tackle California hills and rough terrain. It featured an innovative rear mono-shock swing-arm suspension. Mechanical Features: It used a unique stepped gear or pivoting engine mechanism. Riders could pivot the engine to manually adjust the drive belt tension, granting better torque for hill climbing. Portability & Build: The bike utilized a heavy-duty C-channel frame with "T" handles and forks that allowed the rider to easily break down and store the bike in a car trunk or RV. Alphabetical Series: Powell built the bikes in lettered series (e.g., A, B, C). Each bike's specific configuration, date of manufacture, and original buyer is stamped into the top rail of the frame. Company Closure: Following the passing of Hayward Powell in 1978, the Powell Manufacturing Company officially ceased operations in April 1979. Legacy: Today, the bikes are highly prized by collectors and are frequently celebrated by vintage enthusiast hubs like the OldMiniBikes Forum for their durability and forward-thinking design.
