Any soldier from Korea, Vietnam or today, will recognize the monstrous B-52 Stratofortress. Built from the early 50s until 1962, the fleet has been retrofitted so many times, that the same B-52 flying over the Middle East was likely built during the Korean Conflict. Holding 70,000 pounds of bombs + a range of 8,800 miles, this monster can really rain hell on a large area like North Vietnam (Operation Rolling Thunder). The B-17G, or Flying Fortress came out in 1938. Watch Memphis Belle for a realistic portrayal of life (or death) inside the Fortress. It was a relatively fast, high-flying, long-range bomber with heavy defensive armament at the expense of bomb-load. It developed a reputation for toughness from stories + photos of badly damaged B-17s safely returning to base,pi 00 barely able to fly. In WW2, the B-17s dropped over 640,000 TONS of bombs!! You can see the many gun ports all around the plane that gave it its nickname. Still slow compared to fighters, it must have been absolute fear to sit inside the flying tin can as bullets flew right through the skin. There are 10 air-worthy B-17s today but none were ever in combat. A total of 8,680 G types were built.
