1866 Shield Nickel With Rays First Year Key Variety Fine ✨

Up for sale is an authentic, historic 1866 Shield Nickel struck by the United States Mint during the American Reconstruction era. This landmark piece represents the very first year of the Shield Nickel denomination and features the highly sought-after, short-lived "With Rays" reverse variety. Because the fine rays between the stars caused severe die damage at the mint, they were permanently removed the following year, making this inaugural-year issue an essential type coin for any serious collection. The coin is struck in a copper-nickel composition and stands in solid, honestly circulated Fine condition. The vertical shield lines are distinct, the 1866 date is sharp, and the legendary rays on the reverse remain completely defined and unbroken. It features a beautifully matching charcoal-grey patina built up over a century of survival, making it a perfect addition to any historical display or premium coin stack.
