Description
This is a one of a kind hand blown hemp wrapped lamp with a miniature Norwegian Sea port scene inside replete with sailing ship w 19 flown sails, the blue sea below it and a fenced railing marking where the land starts and behind a light house a building with cotton smoke wafting out the chimney and Norwegian flag flown upon a flag pole and many miniature trees and bushes surrounding the structures. At the water line and below on the lamps base it’s wrapped w decorative hemp rope continuing The Maritime theme with a thick knotted band wrapped all the way around and then hemp encircled gemstones every 2 inches touching each other all the way around the base then above the scene from 10 inches below the bulb housing it’s also wrapped with a similar motif of hemp being in this case maritime rope miniature version and the glass is molded to look like ocean waves it is absolutely unique and I could not find another anywhere online I did some pretty thorough searching although there is Norwegian flags and obviously a celebration of Norway there is a sticker on the bottom old and almost a metal sticker that is ripped a bit but I’m almost positive it says made in Italy so maybe Norwegians sailed through Italy a lot and some Italian artisan tried to cash in on their homesickness if he did I don’t think he was very prolific because I can’t find another one anywhere the person I got this from was an old Norwegian scientist who worked on the first rockets that were made for Hitler’s war machine in Germany he was a co-opted scientist as the Nazis often did co-opted rocket scientist to make the first rockets he had died and I was fixing up his house for his daughter to sell we got to know each other a bit and she had so much stuff from the house that she gave me a few things I have brought this lamp with me to three different places I love it so much it brings me much happiness but alas it’s time for it to find a new home if you love vintage lamps if you love handblown glass you love a maritime scene and you embrace the sea like an old sailor this lamp is a must have a great conversation piece that may be possibly the only one of its kind in existence it is in fantastic condition I have loved it and made sure it was safe in the old man must’ve done the same because the hemp wrapping would be the thing that would go first and it is literally not coming off in the slightest surprisingly it’s not even really yellowed with age too bad because the maker totally soaked it in a glue situation type of thing that made it hard almost plasticky this is a well made piece The hemp does not look hard it looks just like hemp but if you touch it it’s hard because it was soaked in some sort of glue or something that made it so when it dried it was hard and would stand the test of time the Jewels at the center of each circle spiral made with the hemp I can only imagine is not real they are green and I assume glass mimicking emeralds heck for all I know they are v real emeralds either way this piece is a find and a rare beauty and well worth the asking price if this is your type of thing this piece will bring you much joy and pride of ownership .
