1998 Jeep Cherokee

1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport 4.0, 4WD, 4Dr - Strong Running and Fair Cosmetic Condition. This XJ had 1 owner for 17 years. Second owner was Burnsville, NC Sheriff’s Department for 10 years at which time it was outfitted with police lights and siren (since removed) as it was used for driving to remote mountain locations for the purpose of serving warrants and picking up fugitives on outstanding warrants. Thousands have been spent on restoration and repairs including but not limited to new brakes, but it still has a little ways to go . This is an excellent candidate for modification as a rock crawler, overlander, or even for classic restoration. Modifying this XJ for off-road recreation will make any suspension repairs a non-issue although at present I can only think of one or two minor suspension parts that need replacing. This XJ is currently with its 3rd owner, me, and it qualifies for classic car insurance dependent upon the driver and household, so you can potentially insure it for its full value with comprehensive and collision coverage, even in its current state. Many new upgrades have been completed since my recent purchase in February 2025. This XJ was driven from Burnsville, NC taking the long, North route via Illinois and Montana without issue! The engine coolant is bright green in color and I experienced no overheating or breakdowns. She maintained average highway speeds of 75-85 mph and I even drove her in four-wheel drive PT at times, to maintain traction on the icy highways. Inner and outer rocker panels were recently replaced and the entire vehicle would need a paint job but only if you plan on doing a full restoration—otherwise, you could leave the paint as-is. Aside from that, the metal heat shield for the gas tank needs replacement but the body and floorboards are primarily rust-free! Windows are all tinted, including front windows, and all controls are in good working order. The headlights along with all filament, interior/exterior bulbs have been replaced with LED lights throughout along with 50w/6ohm resistors and an LED turn signal relay to eliminate hyper flash and ensure proper functioning of all LED lights. Headlights also have daytime running lights incorporated with a separate toggle switch for operation. Front and rear dash cam system is installed to protect from bad drivers who like to blame everyone else for their own lack of driving skills, and all wires are neatly tucked away and out of view. Vehicle runs cool and the heater blows hot air! AC needs diagnosis. Carpet and seats could use a steam cleaning but the headliner is brand new! Asking $6,750. You can pretty much ignore Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds for value estimates because these vehicles are considered classic now. True, most of those sales are mint or near-mint condition, but that’s why my asking price is below those average sales prices. She’s CA smogged and registered until next year so come take her for a test drive. She runs smooth and strong. I affectionately call her Redrum. Sorry, no trades unless it’s for cash!
