Description
The most significant error on a 1965 quarter is a "transitional error" that occurs when some quarters are made from 90% silver blanks instead of copper-nickel clad, which is intended for 1964 quarters. The Mint kept making 90% silver quarters until they could get enough clad metal stock from the private sector. The date on silver quarters was frozen at 1964 to prevent coin speculators from hoarding, and the first clad quarters were struck in August 1965. However, the quarters weren't released into circulation until November 1965, and the 1965 date was kept until August 1, 1966. A 1965 silver quarter is worth $7,000.
