Description
Traveling Man Treasures is honored to be selling this elegant 19th century carving representing Moggallana: one of the Buddha’s two chief disciples. Made from gilded and lacquered wood with green and silver foiled mirrored glass inserts, Moggallana sits with his hands pressed together in adulation sitting in the traditional position of a Buddhist worshipper (feet pointing behind and away from the focus of veneration) his feet resting over the ends of his trailing robe. The robes are highlighted with bands of molded lacquer relief work, known as thayo work. The lacquer thayo on the robes and heads of each disciple is inset with glass roundels backed with green foil (known as hman-zi- shwei-cha). Images of Moggallana often are found in Burmese artwork. Carved wooden and lacquered images were used in temples and monasteries where they were placed before images of the Buddha as part of a shrine. DIMENSIONS: 11.5” H x 8.5” W x 10” D
