Description
The Columbian Vise and Manufacturing Company, an American company founded in 1905, was a well-known manufacturer of vises, including post vises, woodworking vises, anvils, and clamps, that was based in Cleveland, Ohio. Some historians suggest that most Sears Craftsman vises were made by another famous vise-maker, Wilton Tools of Chicago, Illinois (also the home of Sears Roebuck and Co.) but most of those that weren't made by Wilton were probably made by Columbian…so Columbian obviously knew what they were doing when it came to manufacturing vises. Specifics for this Columbian vise: —Model D44 —Made in USA —4” original serrated jaws, installed with hex-head screws, not Phillips-head screws whose heads tend to strip over time once efforts are made to remove them —inverted U-shaped cover completely protects the big lubricated screw from falling metal filings or wood particles (not all vises do that) —built-in pipe jaws —weighs 25 lbs —7-1/4” tall —13” deep (with jaws closed) —recently disassembled, shiny areas polished, repainted a red color similar to what it left the factory with, and lubricated where needed so that it opens and closes smoothly (Note: Press on each photo to get a more complete view of my item.
