This antique is an early 19th-century camphor wood trunk that has Chinese decoration; it’s often referred to as a Chinese export chest made for trade with the West. Historically, these Chinese export chests were used to store valuables or as trunks to ship garments. Camphor wood was specifically selected as a natural repellant to moths. The trunk is covered in a beautiful, painted-blue leather and bound with brass hardware. As was customary, the trunk features hand-painted floral motifs and is mounted with cast brass bail handles. It will come with the wooden stand.
