Description
Armoire in the Louis Philippe style, a notable furniture style from the reign of King Louis Philippe I in France (1830 to 1848). 42” wide x 15.75” deep x 83.75” tall Key characteristics of the Louis Philippe style, as seen in armoires like the one pictured, include: Simplicity and Functionality: This style moved away from elaborate ornamentation, focusing instead on clean lines, rounded edges, and practicality. Materials: Darker woods like mahogany, walnut, and cherry were commonly used, often with a rich, polished finish that highlighted the natural wood grain. The armoire in the image appears to be made of a dark wood. Minimal Decoration: While some pieces might feature subtle carvings, the overall aesthetic is one of understated elegance, with sparse adornment compared to more ornate styles like Rococo. The armoire in the image shows very little applied decoration, consistent with this. Rounded Forms: Chairs and armoires often featured soft, curved lines, emphasizing comfort and a less formal appearance. Note the rounded top edge and corners of the armoire in the image. Influence of the Bourgeoisie: This style reflected the tastes of the rising middle class, who sought well-made, comfortable, and functional pieces for their homes rather than purely ceremonial or decorative items. Slight crack in the front right door. Does not go all the way through the door.
