Description
A very fine Nicolo Gagliano model violin made by the firm of Ernst Heinrich Roth in 1957, utilizing the trade name of Gustave August Ficker. This instrument bears the label: MADE IN THE SHOP OF(handwritten along the top edge of the label) / Gustave August Ficker/ Mittenwald Anno 1957/ Germany/ Copy of Nicolaus Gagliano/ 185/ Made Especially/ For William Lewis and Son Chicago Ill NS, as well as a brand in the back above the label: G. A. F. This instrument has a big, rich sound to it, proving responsive at every dynamic. Its voice is strong, while still dark and deep. The two-piece maple back is of medium curl descending from the center joint. The maple ribs are of medium curl. The maple head is of fainter medium curl. The two- piece spruce table is of even fine grain. The varnish is an orange brown color over pale golden ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 356 mm, Upper Bouts: 171 mm, Middle Bouts: 123 mm, Lower Bouts: 212 mm.
