Description
A pollard oak and marquetry break fronted wardrobe made by Maple & Co, London. The fruit-festooned scrolling arched pediment and scroll carved cushion-moulded frieze above a pair of paneled doors with scroll and grotesque carved tablets within similar inlaid spandrels over a balustraded compartment and two short and two long drawers, flanked by oped arched compartments and mirrored doors within twist-turned baluster and inlaid blocked uprights on a moulded plinth. This extraordinary wardrobe is one of the most extravagant pieces that Maple & Co. produced. It takes its decorative inspiration from early 17th century Italian Mannerist designs. The carved decoration and marquetry is exceptional. These factors plus the use of burr oak elevate a normally uncommercial type, i.e. a late Victorian wardrobe, to something considerably more decorative. 23” depth 111” height 100” width lol
