Description
Japanese ink stones and ink sticks are traditional tools used in Shōdo (calligraphy) and Sumi-e (ink wash painting) to create liquid. Ink stone is used for grinding solid ink sticks with water to produce ink. They feature a flat surface ( yan tang) for grinding, and a slanted well (mo-chi) for holding the liquid. Ink stick is made from pine or vegetable oil soot, mixed with animal glue. Then dried and aged for several years. To prepare the ink, a small amount of water is placed in the well of the stone, and the ink stick is rubbed in slow circles, until the desired consistency is achieved. This process is considered a meditative, preparatory ritual. Cross streets are West Lake Meade and Fort Apache.
