Description
This is a striking Hopi Left-Handed Katsina doll, fully hand-carved and painted, adorned with traditional natural materials including fur, leather, yarn, and feathers. The figure holds a painted turquoise-blue stick in the left hand and features a dramatic black mask with white geometric facial markings and red ear coverings. It stands on a signed wooden base marked “Left Handed – [signature illegible] – Kachina”. The Left-Handed Katsina (Kaidokopi or Hahai-i Wuhti variant) is an important ceremonial figure in the Hopi pantheon, often depicted with tools reversed and gestures that appear “backwards,” emphasizing the sacred balance and duality of life. It is sometimes affiliated with the warrior class or with clown functions in ceremony.
