Description

40th Anniversary Little Debbie 1(contact info removed) Barbie Doll Special Edition Series IV 24977 NIB 1999 NRFB Vintage Mattel Back of Box: The Little Debbie Shacks Story In 1934, a lively red-haired man named O.D. McKee used his new panel truck as collateral for a $200 loan to buy a cookie bakery. He wanted to compete with the snack wagons which catered to industrial workers in those days. So in 1935 he began experimenting with the hard oatmeal cookies his little shop was baking at that time. He made formula changes to make the cookie soft. He sandwiched two of his soft oatmeal cookies together with a fluffy creme filling. These new "creme pies" sold for a nickel a piece. Mr. McKee was always looking for better ways to make his products, and in doing so he expanded his company many times. Once he had to fill in for one of his absent employees. All day long he turned a hand crank. Later, he drove to a salvage yard and retrieved a gear from an old washing machine. When he returned to the bakery, he replaced the hand crank with the salvaged gear and added a small motor. Thus began the automation process which turned the small bakery owned by Mr. McKee and his wife, Ruth McKee, into the producers of America's Number One Snack Cake In 1960, Ellsworth, son of Mr. and Mrs. McKee, developed a 49c family pack of 12 Oatmeal Creme Pies. Mr. McKee put a picture of his 3-1/2 year-old granddaughter, Debra McKee, on the front and the Little Debbie brand was created. The Little Debbie portrait logo is now an icon that appears in millions of American households each year. Now 40 years later, McKee Foods Corporation (changed from McKee Baking Company in 1991), is still owned by the McKee family, with headquarters located in Collegedale. Tennessee, McKee Foods Corporation operates 6 manufacturing plants located in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Virginia, and employs close to 6,000 people. The Little Debbie brand has nationwide distribution in all 50 states and recently entered the Canadian market. The legacy of Mr. and Mrs. McKee lives on, as their personal "people philosophy" and vision still guide the company. Location: San Dimas Pet and smoke free home.
