Description
Gretsch 1970s five-piece drum set. This is a Gretsch hex badge 1970 era black nitron set. Phil Collins used a similar black shell pack on several occasions. This includes an original bass drum double tom-tom chrome mount. Floor tom-toms have original legs with one exception. Bass drum tom-toms are concert style (designed without bottom heads). The two floor tom-toms have bottom heads as built. Drum sizes are inches with the diameter noted first: bass 24x16, mounted toms 14x10 and 15x12, floor toms 16x18 and 18x16. All but the largest floor tom have Protection Racket padded cases in excellent condition and are included in the price. I purchased the cases in sizes large enough so at the end of a gig they would be easy to reinsert the drums when I was exhausted so you will notice some sizes larger than the drum dimensions. I have owned these for 49 years. I purchased this drum set in 1975 from its original owner in Jacksonville FL. I actively used them for 37 years out of the 49. I gigged (classic rock) with them until 2012 when I updated to a Gretsch New Classic set. It has been in air conditioning (smoke and pet free) from the time I owned it, even when not in use. This set is in very good condition with some player signs of age. All badges are present and undisturbed, good original silver internal paint, all drums have original untouched labels with model and serial numbers (some labels have the original glue evident and slightly absorbed by the label paper so appear as dark stains in pictures), all rims have the original bearing edges. The chrome has some limited areas of very light pitting with only two 3-inch parts of two rims with mild pitting and one 7-inch area and one 3-inch area on two rims with flaking chrome. A few lugs have light pitting (one with mild pitting) but many are in very good condition. The bass and floor toms have original functioning internal mufflers. The wrap has limited areas of light scuffing some nicks and minimal scratches. All the toms have die-cast hoops. Some nitron wrap seams have slight lifting but are not curling. The tom-tom mounting bracket screws for the bass mount have some oxidation and is noticeable more on the internal washers. All but the bass and large floor tom have Remo Coated Ambassador heads. The large floor has a clear Remo pinstripe head. The large floor tom was used the least due to stage size limitations, so it really has little wear. The bass drum beater side has an Evans Emad with external mounted muffler (two diameters of foam inserts) since 2005. The bass black rim inserts had become loose, so I reglued those on to preserve the original look. I replaced the bass drum spur mounts in 2008 with Gretsch replacements as the screws had become stripped. I have a rim-mounted front spur on the bass to prevent forward movement.
