Description
Vintage hand painted scene derived from the famous antique Chinese painting of "100 Children" on 4 panel folding silk screen, Artist signed. Great condition except for minor wear of paint on top of wood frame as shown in picture but the painting itself is perfect. 35" height x 59" length. Wall hanging hard ware included on back of the screen. Description: This particular screen features a hand-painted scene on silk depicting a "hundred children" motif. Chinese art, a "100 Children" painting represents wishes for prosperity, a large family, and the continuation of the family lineage. The theme, which often depicts numerous children engaged in various activities in a garden setting, is a popular motif symbolizing blessings, happiness, and good fortune. Materials: It is typically made with watercolor and gouache on silk, set within a lacquered wood frame with engraved metal corners. Function: Historically, folding screens like this were used to separate interiors, enclose private spaces, and serve as decorative wall art. Symbolism: The number 100 is often used metaphorically to represent an abundance or multitude, not necessarily an exact count of children. The painting's imagery of children at play symbolizes joy, innocence, and the hope for a thriving family. Context: These paintings were popular gifts during celebrations like a child's first 100 days or first year, reflecting the desire for a large family and the prosperity it was believed to bring. Historical Roots: The motif has roots in the Tang dynasty and has evolved over time, with subtle changes in imagery reflecting societal conditions and periods of prosperity or unrest. During prosperous times, the children might be depicted as more plump and carefree, while during times of unrest, the imagery could become more abstract or even distorted. Variations: The theme can be found in various art forms, including paintings, porcelain, and even clothing. The specific activities the children engage in can also carry symbolic meaning, such as holding a deer (longevity) or a fish (abundance). Cultural Significance: The "100 Children" theme is a testament to the importance of family and lineage in Chinese culture, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It represents the desire for a large, healthy, and successful family, bringing honor and prosperity to the family name. Cash Only.
