Description
Vintage blonde mid-century modern MCM 50s zenith cobra-matic console record player radio This is a very rare and cool piece. Blonde color should go with much 50s 60s mid-century decor. Good condition overall. The top has some scratches and could benefit from refinishing, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary for you to place in your home and enjoy. The cabinet is solid and sturdy. Powers on and lights up. Tubes seem to be working okay as far as I could test out. The record player activates and the mechanisms seem to be okay although they might need some work and adjusting to work perfectly. More significantly though, there is a wheel inside that turns the turntable that needs replacement. It is made of some kind of graphite but I believe it is supposed to have a rubber tire on it essentially that goes up against the wheel that spins from the motor. The motor seems to spin properly. I think a screw came out and it damaged the wheel. Even as is, I was able to get a record to spin and you could hear it play, but it's obviously messed up. There is a website online that sells parts and while I didn't get into finding the exact replacement, it looks like they have a large selection and you mail in yours and they send you a rebuilt one. The prices for similar are about 35 bucks. It may need some other things, but this is the main one from what I can see. Also, the radio plays and actually sounds great. It has a very nice rich tone through the speaker. But I can only pick up things on AM. And the little adjuster dial might be stuck so you can't see what channel you are dialing in. I think that could probably be unstuck or adjusted, but the knob does dial through the stations and you can hear them pretty well and the little buttons on the side enhance the face or other elements. The FM does not seem to come through. There is a little screw on the back where you screw on an FM antenna and I am thinking that is the reason. But I can't guarantee it doesn't need something else. So, to work properly, this is definitely a little project but the main components seem to be working and it's going to need some attention from an enthusiast. Fortunately there are many enthusiasts with a lot of good information online and a website company devoted to replacement parts. I have priced accordingly taking these things into account on what I would expect the value to be. You are welcome to come and plug it in and check it out if you like. Available in Northeast Seattle on 125th. Delivery around Seattle could be possible for free or a reasonable charge. Let me know if you have any questions.
