Description
Researching this item was interesting. These were used from 1780 to 1860. Whale oil had a consistent ‘burn rate’. On the side are Roman numerals that you will notice begin at 6 (presumably 6 pm)They were especially useful on ships, because the rolling of the waves would not interfere with the keeping of time and the numbers (hours of time) end at 6:30 am. The light as the oil burned would allow ones to always know what time it was, in the night. It was especially useful on ships, as the design of the lamp, made the burn rate not affected by the rolling of the waves, and the navigator would be able to chart his path and other features of their journey. It is a rare item. There is a wick tied on to the handle, and not placed inside the lamp. i have no way of knowing if the wick is original, but to my untrained eye it does not appear so. 13 1/4 “ high, 5” round
