Description

This elegant round mahogany pedestal table with brass lion head pulls and claw feet dates from the early 1930s and has been in my family since it was originally purchased. Its design is consistent with English Regency revival styles popular during the era. Originally, this table housed a built-in vacuum tube radio. The internal components are no longer present, but evidence of the original setup remains: • A concealed compartment with cutouts for tuning dials and volume knobs (hidden behind a front door) • Ventilation grills and screw holes on the underside where the radio chassis was once mounted While no maker's marks are visible, research indicates that, in the 1930s, a number of American companies either: 1. Manufactured radios and installed them in high-end furniture (e.g., Philco, RCA, Zenith, Sparton, Atwater Kent), or 2. Supplied custom wood cabinets to radio manufacturers (notably Pooley Furniture Co. and Red Lion Cabinet Co., both based in Pennsylvania). It’s also worth noting that several prestigious British furniture makers—including Waring & Gillow, Hampton & Sons, and Holland & Sons—produced similar pedestal tables during the same period. However, I can find no known record of these firms integrating radios into their cabinetry, suggesting the table was likely crafted in the U.S. by a radio cabinet supplier using English design inspiration. This piece is both a handsome accent table and a unique historical artifact from the golden age of radio. If local - shipping can be arranged
