Description

The Hitched Horsehair Quirt is a unique piece of Western Americana from the early to mid-20th century, possibly originating from Deer Lodge Prison, Montana. Handmade in the United States, this artifact showcases the craftsmanship and culture of Western Americana. With its intricate design and historical significance, this quirt is a valuable collectible item for those interested in antique Western pieces. This beautiful quirt was bought at a Colorado Western Collectibles Show in the 1980's. Although provenance is unknown, it is probably early to mid-20th century and told it might have been made at Deer Lodge Montana Prison, or similar. The tightly hitched horsehair in geometric patterns, and the use of black, red, and beige chevron zig zag patterns is consistent with Deer Lodge pieces from the 1920's onward. It is unclear whether this item is of Native American or of American Western (cowboy) origin. The wrist loop has tufts of horsehair and the lash has a horsehair tassel ( both of brown, black, and white color). There are two leather lashes (poppers) connected to the bottom with rawhide (the horsehair tassel is missing). The zigzag or Chevron pattern and colors are consistent with known Deer Lodge styles from the mid-20th Century. These color combinations were commonly used by inmates, often dyed using natural or prison-sourced material. The stitching of the quirt is extremely uniform and tight, which is a hallmark of Deer Lodge craftsmanship. The presence of multiple tufts/tassels and leather extensions is also typical. Many featured 3 knots/knobs and 2 flares of horsehair, of which the structure of this piece follows. The quirt is of moderate length at 34 iinches, and the condition is very good considering age.
