Description

Kazimierz & Aniela — Krakow, 1989 There was a shop on Grodzka Street with no sign. You found it by the cold coming off the glass. He was tall, in a heavy wool sweater, his back to you. He worked without looking. This one — he called him Kazimierz — 11 inches of pulled smoke and dusty rose, pleated like a silk dress caught in a doorway. Stoic. A little severe. The kind of man who reads in cafés alone and remembers your order. She was on the lower shelf. Aniela. Round, low, opal white with a sudden, unapologetic slash of burgundy, as if she had knocked over a glass of wine and decided it looked better that way. She didn't need height. The room came to her. He wrapped them in newspaper — Trybuna Ludu, November — and handed them over without a word. Warsaw to Amsterdam to Charlotte in the overhead bin. Security wanted to open the box. You said no. They have lived on a black lacquer checker table ever since. Kazimierz, standing guard. Aniela, holding court. Heavy, hand-blown, cold to the touch. Original MADE IN POLAND labels still on their feet. Passports intact. We are selling them as they were found. Together. Lot 246-B: Kazimierz (11" H, pulled-feather) & Aniela (6" H, low orb). Confirmed Polish Studio Glass, Krosno era, 1980s. Labeled. Heavy cased glass. No chips. Burgundy / aubergine / opal. $135 for the pair. Will not separate. After 35 years together, some things have earned the right to stay that way.
