Description

Rare large oil painting on canvas by famous artist Lyman Byxbe depicting a beautiful landscape scene near Estes Park, CO. Expertly rendered trees on either side of the composition frame Fish Creek meandering through a verdant valley. In the distance, snow covered mountains complement a blue and white sky. Signed in lower right. Frame has some water damage, but the painting and back appears to be undamaged. Frame has some scuffs and scratches here and there. Back has a sketched map of the scene with the names of the mountains and creek. Lyman Byxbe was one of many great artists who have turned to the majestic Rocky Mountains for inspiration and the subject matter of their compositions. Born in Pittsfield, Illinois, he began at an early age to teach himself to draw. He became a successful commercial artist in Omaha, Nebraska, where he studied the art of etching under Mark Levings. In 1938, Byxbe moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where he had a summer studio for many years. Recently in the last few years, Lyman Byxbe has been honored by membership in the Chicago Society of Etchers, Miniature Print Society of Kansas City, Missouri, and Northwest Printmakers of Seattle, Washington. He is represented in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Arts, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Library of Congress, at Washington, D.C.
