Description
A few weeks after taking my PC out of a storage unit, it failed to power up. Upon further inspection, I found a literal rat’s nest in the PSU compartment (PSA: DO NOT use Public Storage). The PSU (EVGA 650gq from 2016) seems to have been affected as the motherboard has some blown components that are leaking electrolyte fluid in the case. On the other hand, the motherboard was old, not super high quality, and running an overclocked CPU for 8 years; it may have been the singular point of failure and the PSU might be fine. There are likely some parts worth salvaging here; despite the hidden nest, it still functioned normally for a long time. I already repurposed the storage for my new PC build (I was planning an upgrade anyways, luckily), but the case (NZXT S340), RAM (16gb DDR4), CPU (i5 6600k), and CPU cooler (corsair H100i with LGA 1151 bracket and 2 working fans) are likely all in working order. The PSU may be fine too, but I’d caution against testing it on your other working components! I don’t have the time or spare parts to test each component to see if it is still working, so I’m just putting this all out there to anyone who wants to find themselves a good deal on a mystery box of PC scraps.
