Description

If time was not a factor, I would happily keep this compact, 5-door station wagon and put it in line to wait its turn for glory along with the other projects on my list. Sadly, my time is finite, and parting ways with this 1961 Peugeot 403 is a decision based on practicality. The car is equipped with a 4-speed, manual transmission (column shift) bolted up to an inline 4-cylinder under the hood. I’m no French car expert, but it appears to be the original, or at least period-correct, petrol-powered, 89.5 cubic inch engine. The car does not run thanks to some damage to the electrical system. While parked in storage, an adjacent car caught fire, and the radiant heat melted the battery and some of the wiring under the hood and in the cabin of the 403. It was a sad, sad day. However, the engine is complete, turns over by hand, and a quick check of the oil dipstick reveals nothing of concern. The car is solid. Along with a once over of the exterior, looking inside and under the carpet provides further assurances. The steel has persevered, although the same can not be said for the upholstery. While there’s no cancer or rotted steel needing replaced, the interior panels, upholstery, and headliner all demand attention, as do some of the lights and lens around the exterior. There are also some dents, and a new driver-side front fender would be in order, unless the new owner can massage all that metal back into place. The car is restorable or would make a super cool hot rod, rat rod, or sleeper. The latter was my vision, but I have determined it is beyond my capacity at this time. Several other projects are already in the queue. The previous owner (PO) collected a number of extra parts that will accompany the car to its new home. While in Europe, he bought a diesel-powered, 1962 Peugeot 403 Break. It was rusted badly, so he cut it up and sent all the doors, bumpers, rims, seats, and the complete front of the car back to Arizona. I purchased that from him as well, pulled it apart, and saved what I could. That includes the front axle assembly, steering column and gear box, engine (diesel), transmission (manual), pedal assembly, and instrument cluster/gauges/assembly. I also have a new, tinted windshield he had custom made in Europe. It is safely tucked away inside my house. In addition to a few other items I can't immediately recall, the following extra parts are included: Windshield (new) Rear passenger-side cargo glass Doors (side and rear) Hood Bumpers Hubcaps Wheels Grilles Steering wheel (great condition) Seats Jacks Drums Gauges/gauge assembly w/housing Front axle assembly w/springs, hubs, drums
