The artwork depicts the famous classical Roman sculpture known as The Dying Gaul (The Dying Gladiator) and is considered to have been a souvenir of the "Grand Tour" dating to the turn of the century. The original sculptor's identity is unknown, but it's been suggested it may have been Epigonus, a court sculptor of the Attalid Dynasty of Pergamon (230-220 B.C.)
