Description
Offered as one lot are two antique hand-forged branding irons together with two antique hand-forged iron railroad spikes. The two long tools are wonderful examples of early blacksmith work, with individually forged construction, twisted iron shafts, substantial tapered handles and unusual open working ends. Both long tools are complete and intact. Their unusual head shapes are original to the construction and are not broken or missing pieces. The two large iron railroad spikes are included with the branding irons as part of this primitive iron lot. They have irregular hand-forged shafts and formed heads consistent with early blacksmith-made construction. The long branding irons measure approximately 15–16 inches long, while the spikes are approximately 5½–6 inches long. All four pieces retain substantial age-related oxidation, surface texture and patina. They have not been cleaned or restored, which preserves their authentic primitive appearance. I believe these items are likely 19th century, although no maker marks or documentation are present, so the precise age and original use cannot be guaranteed. A great group for collectors of antique branding irons, early American tools, blacksmith-made iron, primitive wares or country décor. Item specifics: Material: Hand-Forged Iron; Style: Primitive / Early American; Era: 19th Century, estimated; Original/Reproduction: Original; Number of Pieces: 4; Condition: Antique, complete, heavy oxidation and patina; Maker: Unknown.
