Description
In 60+ years of using Leicas, Canons, Speed Graphics (4x5) and 2.25” square equipment, I’ve found that this macro lens yields the sharpest results. The SMC 50 mm f/2.8 Macro is a full-frame autofocus macro, introduced in 1990 and produced until 2004. This prime lens is designed for the Pentax KAF mount. It delivers true 1:1 magnification and is one of the sharpest standard macros of its era — ideal for product photography, close-up work, and even general-purpose shooting, thanks to its compact size and optical precision. With the appropriate adapter, it can give you wonderful results on a Sony, Canon or Nikon digital box, (full-frame or APS-C). Optically, it features an 8-element, 7-group design with Super Multi-Coating (SMC). Aperture control is by an 8-blade automatic diaphragm, stopping down to f/32. The lens focuses as close as 19 cm, offering life-size reproduction with a working distance of just over an inch. It uses a 52 mm filter thread and weighs 385 g. Autofocus is driven by a screw-drive motor, and while it lacks internal focusing or quick-shift, it includes a manual aperture ring with “A” setting and a focus clamp to stiffen the focus ring for precise manual adjustments. The front element is deeply recessed, so no hood is needed. Weight is 13.6 oz. My clients’ impressions are glowing. It’s praised for its outstanding sharpness, (even wide open), smooth bokeh, and excellent color fidelity. Stopping down to f/5.6–f/8 yields edge-to-edge clarity, and the lens performs beautifully on both film and digital bodies.
