Description
Antique cylindrical barrel padlock (mid-18th century to early 19th century). This lock is European, made from hand-forged iron and fully functional. Turn the key inward (clockwise) to unlock, and outward (counter-clockwise) to lock. This is a great conversation piece, highly collectible and brought to the U.S. by my parents in the 1960’s. Lock is 6-1/8” long, and 2-3/8” wide (when locked). Generally, the dating of these locks is ~1750 to ~1900. This lock is likely from the first half of that range because it’s: (1) unmarked which indicates older (marked or branded locks originated later), and (2) forged from iron (brass and steel locks originated later). It’s fully functional which is a rarity to find an iron lock more than ~200 years old with a working mechanism and rust-free. $60. Pick up at Central Ave and Encanto, in central Phoenix (near the Heard Museum).
