Description

AUTHENTIC FRENCH BRONZE MEDAL COMMEMORATING “WEDDING OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE AND MARIE-LOUISE OF AUSTRIA” 1810 Immerse yourself in history with this 1810 Napoleon Bonaparte bronze medal, a stunning tribute to one of the most iconic marital unions in history. Price: $100 Condition: Uncirculated (UNC) – Shows no signs of wear from circulation. Beautifully preserved bronze color. Metal: Bronze Year Struck: 1810 (MDCCCX) Manufactory: Paris Mint Size: 33.6 millimeters Weight: 15.63 grams Designer: Franz Stuckhart Occasion: 1810 Wedding of Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie-Louise of Austria Obverse of Medal: Facing pairs of conjoined busts, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his new bride Marie-Louise facing those of her parents, Emperor Francis I of Austria and his wife Empress Maria Ludovika. Above their busts are the legends in two lines reading: “FRANCISCUS I * NAPOLEON I / M. LUDOVICA * M. LUDOV.” The name “F. STUCKHART” for designer Franz Stuckhart is in the exergue (the small space below the central design). Reverse of Medal: Concordia is seated on a throne holding two giant cornucopias with her name “CONCORDIA” written on a banner above. In Roman mythology, Concordia was a goddess who represented agreement in marriage and society, a rather appropriate symbol for the union of Napoleon’s French Empire with the Austrian Empire. The two cornucopias represent prosperity for both empires. On the bottom to the right of the throne are the letters “ST” for designer Franz Stuckhart. The year 1810 is written as “MDCCCX” in Roman numerals in the exergue. Historical Significance: In 1810, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of France, married Marie-Louise, the daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Their marriage was seen as a strategic alliance between France and Austria, solidifying Napoleon’s power in Europe. The union resulted in the birth of a son and heir, Napoleon II, who briefly held the title of King of Rome. This bronze medal not only commemorates the wedding of Napoleon and Marie-Louise, but also represents the complex political alliances and power dynamics of the early 19th century. It serves as a tangible reminder of the grandeur and intricacies of European history during that time.
