Description
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands, headquarters Assistant Commissioner of the state of NC Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 56th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on October 1, 1861, and served until he was discharged on December 16, 1863. On August 6, 1864 he was commissioned Captain in the 21st Veterans Reserve Corps, and was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He was in the Regular Army after the war, rising to the rank of Major and brevet Lieutenant Colonel. He served as an adjutant to Colonel Nelson A. Miles, who commanded the District of North Carolina. He was later Assistant Commissioner for North Carolina Freedman's Bureau from October 1868 to January 1869. On July 29, 1871 his wife, Harriet Chur, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension. This letter is dated March 22nd, 1867 from Raleigh, NC. I believe it's to Major Hannibal D. Norton, who was the Asst superintendent of Goldsboro, NC, will proceed to Snow Hill Greene County NC on business of the Bureau and will return to his proper station when the same is completed.
