I also worked with Johnny his manager and Brendan and they were all a pleasure to work with. There’s one very high pressure salesman there that I would avoid. Love my car.

Buyer Beware: This Dealership Operates With ZERO Integrity

After nearly two weeks of discussions with Branden, Liam, and John of STA Auto Group (Thousand Oaks and Ventura locations) regarding a specific vehicle, Branden scheduled an in-person appointment for my wife and me at their Thousand Oaks dealership.  They knew in advance we were driving from Orange County – over two hours each way.

Upon arrival, we inspected and test-drove the vehicle and made it clear to our salesperson, Johnny, that we wanted the car and were ready cash buyers. While seated at Johnny’s desk asking reasonable questions about scratches that were not disclosed or shown in the photos previously provided, another couple – who had a later “appointment” for the same vehicle – was waiting nearby.

The moment we raised these legitimate concerns, Johnny abruptly took the other couple into a back room, completed a sale with them, and returned to tell us, without explanation, “Sorry, the car is sold.”

No transparency.  No professionalism.  No integrity.

In my opinion, this conduct was deliberately misleading and deeply unethical.  The dismissive, unapologetic attitude that followed only reinforced the impression that honesty and customer respect are not priorities here.  STA Auto Group wasted our time and treated us as disposable the moment we asked questions.

There are plenty of used car dealerships in Southern California.  This is not one I would ever recommend to anyone who values transparency, fairness, or basic respect.

Summary:  My son and I ended up buying a car here, but had to battle unethical business practices and a lack of professionalism in order to make it happen.

- We called STA ahead of time and set an appointment to come see a car that was posted online for a price of $7,999 (on BOTH cars.com and on STA's own website).

- Once we arrived, the sticker price on the car was thousands of dollars higher than what was posted online.  When I asked the salesman to confirm that it was the same car and/or to explain the disparity, he said that the "true" price of the car was what was listed ONLINE - the inflated sticker price was merely a "worst case scenario" if someone couldn't get good financing.

- (Sticker prices have nothing to do with financing.  When they are inflated, it is merely intended to make the buyer think they are getting a better deal than they actually are.)

- Once we took the car for a test drive and it was clear we wanted to buy it, we filled out the initial paperwork and stated that we did not need financing - we would be paying CASH.

- About an HOUR later, salesperson (finally) brought out the purchase agreement, but it listed a price of $8,999 ($1,000 OVER the online price), presumably because he (now) knew he had a CASH buyer who might not be sensitive to a price increase.

- When I questioned the new price, the salesman INITIALLY claimed that the price listed on cars.com is not always accurate and that $8,999 was the "true" price of the car.

- HOWEVER, I proceeded to show him that the price listed on cars.com ($7,999) was the EXACT SAME price listed on STA's OWN WEBSITE.

- Rather than acknowledge this, he proceeded to explain that we should still be happy about the "great deal" we were getting because the Lo Jack system that came with the car was valued by STA at $1,495.  (Later, I researched that Lo Jack systems are worth less than $500, installed.)

- We made it clear that we did NOT want the Lo Jack system to begin with, nor did we want to pay for a feature that was NOWHERE mentioned in the listing for the car and that was NOT communicated to us UP FRONT.

- At that point, the salesman pointed out some "fine print" in their advertising, which states:

"All our vehicles may be subject to the dealer-installed option GPS anti-theft system Known as ELO or Lo Jack ($1,495). This system is designed to enhance the security and tracking of your vehicle. Details regarding the features, benefits, and additional costs of this system are available upon request."

- The salesman said this "fine print" was adequate notice that the Lo Jack system was a REQUIRED feature of the car we wanted to purchase EVEN THOUGH it was not contained in the listing for the car, nor had he mentioned it to us ahead of time.

- (The "fine print" does not suggest any "requirement".  It merely states that all cars "MAY" be subject to an "OPTIONAL" anti-theft system.)

- (If the intention is (truly) to give consumers adequate notice about the additional cost of the Lo Jack system (rather than making it a hidden fee), then why don't they just state it plainly instead of stashing it in the fine print?)

- When I pushed back on this, the salesman began a very well-rehearsed defense of the legality of their advertising, trying to impress me with the fact that their corporate counsel "used to work for Netflix."  (As if to say STA's methodology might be considered UNETHICAL, but we've verified that it's still LEGAL!)

- When I insisted on paying the online price of $7,999 and insisted on having the Lo Jack system removed, the salesman initially told me "I don't care if you walk out the door" and "I'm not afraid of you."

- Yet, realizing the sale was in jeopardy, he then (allegedly) left to talk to the "president of the company," returning about 45 minutes later to revise the purchase price to $7,999.

- The Lo Jack system was EASILY removed from the car in about 2-3 minutes (meaning there is NO need for STA to make the system a requirement on any of its vehicles - it is not a hardship to remove).
