Mid-century piece manufactured by Syroco (Syracuse Ornamental Company) or Dart Industries (which acquired Syroco). Starting in the 1960s, these companies perfected injection-molded thick polystyrene plastic to create affordable home decor. They intentionally replicated massive, heavy 19th-century European hand-carved wood frames. Because they are hollow plastic on the inside, they weigh only a few pounds despite looking like massive, dense plaster or gilded wood.
