It represents a monumental moment in American currency history: it belongs to the very last series of traditional, large-sized dollar coins ever minted by the United States for public circulation. Following a nearly 40-year absence of the one-dollar coin in American pockets, Congress authorized this special design to honor two massive national milestones: the legacy of late WWII General and 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and America's triumph in space. The Fascinating Secret Behind It The most fascinating feature of this coin is on the reverse side, which proudly bears the original Apollo 11 moon mission patch design. Drawn directly from the emblem designed by astronaut Michael Collins, the reverse depicts an American Eagle landing on the surface of the moon, clutching an olive branch of peace, while the planet Earth hangs visibly in the stars above. Because these heavy coins were so massive, the public rarely carried them for everyday shopping. Instead, the vast majority of these 1974 circulation strikes traveled straight to the American West, where they became the legendary, heavy "hard money" fueling the high-stakes table games and slot machines of vintage Nevada casinos. Holding this coin allows you to touch an era when American grit conquered both the silver screen of Las Vegas and the final frontier of space.
