Inside Out is a 2015 Disney Pixar film that explores the emotions of an 11-year-old girl named Riley as she moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. The movie takes place in Riley's mind, where her emotions live in Headquarters, the control center that guides her through life. Plot: Riley's emotions are Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. Joy is Riley's main emotion, but other emotions become more important as Riley struggles to adjust to her new life. Riley's experiences are stored as colored orbs called memories, which are sent to long-term memory each night. Riley's personality is represented by five floating islands that correspond to her core memories. When Riley's emotions conflict, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Joy tries to keep things positive, but accidentally knocks loose the other core memories, disabling the personality islands. Without Joy and Sadness, the other emotions try to make happy core memories, but the results are disastrous. Riley eventually decides to run away from home, but allows herself to feel sadness, which helps her decide not to go through with it. Themes: The movie explores the challenges of growing up and the importance of understanding and accepting all emotions. The movie suggests that a rich array of both positive and negative emotions can contribute to better mental health.
