This basket has been hand woven by highly skilled women artisans in Uganda. These baskets were purchased and brought back to the US by my husband and 100% of the profits go to support a vulnerable family in Uganda. The Diameter is 12” and the baskets are 3” deep. The baskets are a highly functional piece of art and are safe to use with food. They can be the center of attention on your table, hold fresh fruit or bread, or be used to decorate a wall or shelf. Each basket has a hook on the back which enables them to be hung on a wall. Because they are handcrafted, each piece is a one of a kind and certain variations in dimensions and leaf color may occur. Basketry is the most developed craft in Uganda and is a skill passed down by women from generation to generation. Traditionally baskets were used to store dry food such as beans and also to serve ‘matoke’ (the Ugandan dish of steamed green bananas) which were laid on banana leaves. This basket is made from the stem of a banana leaf which has been cut into thin strips or ‘Obukedo.’ These are dried, coiled and bound to one another using Raffia or ‘Buso.’ Raffia is the part of the newly shooting palm leaf that holds the leaf together before it opens. Many of the patterns are traditional designs.
