Description

Rare antique Jewish prayer book printed in Vienna in 1862 by Jacob Schloßberg’s Buchhandlung. This is the fifth edition of Gebete der Israeliten vollständig für alle Tage des Jahres, translated and edited by Dr. J. Goldenthal, noted professor of Oriental languages at the University of Vienna. The book is bilingual, with Hebrew and German side-by-side, intended for the Israelite youth and household devotion. Bound in an ornate red/maroon embossed leather hardcover with gilt spine title (Gebetbuch). A historical artifact of Jewish life in 19th century Austria, printed just a few years before major political and cultural shifts across Europe. Condition: The book shows wear consistent with age: rubbing to covers and edges, some foxing and age toning to pages, gilt edges dulled, with owner’s ink stamp on title pages (“Jacob Wetzelar in Bonn”). Binding remains sound and pages are intact. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for any questions you may have or for more pics or info. Thanks.
