Description

We are selling our beloved 1985 VW Vanagon, “Hugh,” after over a decade of ownership as we retire and begin extended international travel. This van has been a trusted travel companion, and it is now fully dialed in and road-ready for its next chapter. Asking Price: $43,000 Key Highlights * 198,000 miles on chassis * Custom-built 2.2L engine installed ~2,000 miles ago in April 2026 * New radiator installed May 2026 * Over $40,000 invested since 2015 in maintenance and upgrades * Extensive service history with Westy Werks / Broad Street Automotive (over $23,000 alone) in California near GoWesty. * Fully functional and road-trip ready in all systems * Clean, well-sorted camper setup with thoughtful upgrades throughout Engine & Mechanical Approximately 2,000 miles ago, Hugh received a fully custom-built 2.2L engine installed and tuned by a long-time Volkswagen Vanagon specialist (Rogelio VW, La Paz). The result is a noticeable improvement in drivability, with stronger highway performance and improved overall reliability compared to the original engine. A brand-new radiator was also installed in May 2026 in preparation for sale, completing a fresh and well-sorted cooling system. The van has been consistently maintained with a strong service history and significant investment in mechanical reliability over the years. Interior & Equipment Hugh is fully equipped for travel and includes: * Custom water resistant tent shell * Mosquito net system for side windows, sliding door, and rear hatch * Custom full privacy curtains, including front cab coverage * Roof rack with dual skyboxes * BougeRV 53-quart 12V refrigerator (included; upgraded from GoWesty fridge conversion setup) * Additional travel and camping accessories included with sale Condition & Use Everything on the van is in working order and has been used regularly for extended travel. The van is turnkey and ready for road use immediately. Photos include a mix of recent and historical images, with the most recent showing updated black rims. Viewing & Availability The van is currently available for viewing and purchase until June 20 while we are in Georgia and North Carolina. After that date, it will be placed into long-term storage until our return in 2028. Serious inquiries only—this is a well-sorted, heavily invested Vanagon that has been actively maintained and recently refreshed for continued travel. t’s been over a decade of love for our 1985 VW Vanagon ‘Hugh’. However, we just retired and are leaving the country in July to travel internationally over the next few years. It’s therefore sadly time to say goodbye to Hugh. We have invested over $40,000 in Hugh since we bought him in 2015 and it’s been worth every penny. If you are familiar with the VW van specialist shop called Westy Werks (aka Broad Street Automotive) in San Luis Obispo, our work history with them alone totals over $23,000. In addition, two thousand miles ago, in preparation for selling, we replaced the 1.9L engine with a custom built 2.2L engine. What a difference! We had that work performed in April of this year by a 40 year veteran mechanic of WV vans, ‘Geraldo VW’ (Rogelio) in La Paz Mexico. We also just spent $950 this month (May) on a brand new radiator as we knew that had not been replaced since we bought Hugh. Everything in the van is fully working, and we have a host of extras that we will be leaving for the new owners that include: - Mosquito nets for both side door windows, the main slider, and the hatch back. - Custom curtains all round for full privacy, including the front. - Both skyboxes on the roof rack. - As we performed the GoWesty fridge conversion (which has been so helpful for storage) we are going to leave our 53 quart BougeRV 12V refrigerator which works great. - Other misc items too many to mention. The photos are a mix of years, with the most recent being with the new black rims. Now here is the thing, there is only a very small window to contact us and view the van before we place it in storage and go travel. After June 20th it will stay in storage until we return in late 2028. We (and Hugh) will be in Georgia and North Carolina until June 20th. So you can email or text us if interested.
