Description
Vintage 1986 Signed John Perry Three-Dolphin Sculpture Burl Wood Base Authentic. Length 8”. Height:2” The dolphins are crafted from John Perry’s signature durable Pellucida resin and mounted seamlessly to a natural California Burlwood base. This mid-century modern rustic decor would appeal to fans of the retro 1980s Beach House aesthetics dated 1986 vintage. Hand signed base: explicitly states that this is a rare version, hand signed in ink by the artist on the raw wood, rather than just having a glue on metal badge or an engraving on the plastic. John Perry was a California-based wildlife artist and sculptor known for creating accessible, nature inspired sculptures. He passed away in 2021, but his art studio continues to operate today. He became a prominent figure in the coastal and environmental art movements of the 1970s and 1980s. His work remains a staple of vintage mid-century and retro California beach. The vision: Perry founded the John Perry studio in California 1973. His philosophy philosophy was that beautiful sculpture should be accessible and affordable to everyone, rather than restricted to expensive materials like Cass bronze or carved marble. To achieve this he invented Pellucida a proprietary resin coumpound. It can be molded and airbrush to resemble delicate bisque, porcelain, frosted glass, or polished marble, but it is much more durable and cost-effective. Signature Aesthetic: his signature style involves mounting these white or airbrush, marine animals, such as dolphins, whales, sharks, and pelicans onto raw, highly textured chunks of California Burlwood or driftwood. The contrast between the smooth fluid animals and the rugged organic wood become lightly recognizable. Pop Culture Contribution: beyond Marine life, Perry studio designed the famous turtle dove ornament pair featured heavily in the 1992 film home alone 2:lost in New York, which his studio still sells replicas of today. His ultimate goal as an artist was to bring people into close proximity with realistic animal art, fostering empathy, and support for wildlife.
