Originally these are plastic, but I have upgraded this engines flywheel to a Briggs and Stratton aluminum ring-gear. The Briggs and Stratton aluminum ring-gear upgrade-kit is significantly stronger and more reliable then the original plastic ring gear that was installed from the factory.
