Description
Offered here is a handsome 14-volume set from the deluxe edition of Charles Dickens’ Complete Works, published by Frank F. Lovell & Company, New York (142–144 Worth Street) in the late 19th century. Each volume is uniformly bound in marbled boards with leather spines and corners, featuring ornate gilt titles and decorative black banding. The set is richly illustrated with over 150 engravings by Fred Barnard, whose work is celebrated for its vivid and realistic portrayal of Dickens’ characters. This edition includes nearly all of Dickens’ major novels and shorter works, such as: David Copperfield Bleak House Great Expectations A Tale of Two Cities Oliver Twist Pickwick Papers Nicholas Nickleby Martin Chuzzlewit Little Dorrit Dombey and Son Barnaby Rudge The Old Curiosity Shop Sketches by Boz American Notes The Uncommercial Traveller A Child’s History of England Note: Volume XIV (Christmas Stories and Reprinted Pieces) is missing from this set. The remaining 14 volumes are present and uniformly bound. Condition: Fair to good overall. Bindings are intact with some rubbing and wear to leather edges and corners. Marbled boards show light fading and scuffing consistent with age. Pages are generally clean, with expected toning and occasional foxing. Illustrations remain clear and well-preserved. Gilt titles on spines are legible, though dulled in places. Provenance & Appeal: This deluxe Lovell edition is a fine example of late 19th-century American publishing, combining literary completeness with decorative craftsmanship. Even incomplete, the set makes a striking display and remains highly collectible for Dickens enthusiasts and lovers of Victorian bindings. Estimated Value: In fair-to-good condition, this 14-volume set is valued at $350–$600. With the missing volume replaced, the set could reach $500–$800.
