Philadelphia: Porter and Coates, no date [ca. 1880s]. Reprint. 252 pp. Hardcover. A decorative edition of Walter Scott's The Monastery, a historical novel set in the Scottish borderlands during the Protestant Reformation. It is one of Scott's "Waverly novels," the collective name for his novels that were originally attributed to "the author of Waverly." This edition is a nice example of late 19th century popular literature. This decorative late Victorian binding reflects that popularity; decorative, affordable editions of popular literature were in high demand thanks to a newly literate working class, Charles Eastlake's influential Hints on Household Taste, and new developments in printing technology.
