Description
make an offer five-dollar banknote from the Confederate States of America, issued during the American Civil War. The note features a portrait of Christopher G. Memminger, the first Confederate Secretary of the Treasury. The text on the note states that it is a promise to pay the bearer "SIX MONTHS AFTER THE RATIFICATION OF A TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES AND THE UNITED STATES". This type of currency, sometimes called a "Greyback," was not backed by hard assets, but by the promise of a Southern victory. Because of the Confederacy's defeat, the money became worthless after the war ended in 1865. Today, these notes are considered collectible items
