Description
This item is a vintage Paymaster check writer from the 1950s or 1960s. It features a distinctive mint green industrial design with silver metal accents. These machines were used in businesses to mechanically emboss and protect checks to prevent alteration. Models commonly found in this style include the Series X-550. Its primary purpose was check fraud prevention. Instead of writing monetary amounts by hand—which could easily be altered by fraudsters—a user would set these sliding columns to the exact dollar and cent amounts. Pushing down the large mechanical side handle would physically emboss and print the numeric values deeply into the check paper using an inked ribbon, making alteration nearly impossible. Amount Sliders: The adjustable vertical levers represent individual place value columns (such as hundreds, tens, ones, and cents).Locked Protection Mechanism: The front face reads "Locked Paymaster Protection," referring to an internal key-lock feature that blocked unauthorized employees from using the machine to forge company checks.Retro Aesthetics: The machine features a distinctive mint green/sage green baked-enamel finish and mid-century typography typical of 1950s and 1960s industrial office equipment.
