Chinoiserie Hand-Painted Toleware Basket

Vintage hand-painted metal oval cachepot, planter, or wastebasket featuring botanical and butterfly imagery. Chinoiserie is the European and Western artistic interpretation, and imitation of Chinese and East Asian designs. This style is named after the French word for Chinese, “Chinois” and it blends fantasy, romanticized Eastern motifs and Western craftsmanship. This movement peaked in the mid-18th century and is tied to the Rocco style using pastels, gilding, and whimsical floral and garden imagery. This movement experienced revivals in the mid-19th century and again in the 1930’s. This piece was gently used and does have some scratches mostly on the back, sides and along the bottom edge of the front. Please see all photos showing these imperfections. There is also a small scratch/chip on the front side, under the third green leaf of the flower. And another to the left of the green leafs near the left side about halfway up. Please see pictures.
